5th & 6th Grade

Our curriculum for 5th and 6th Grade is designed to challenge students as they prepare for the middle school years ahead.  Mathematics instruction takes a “front seat” in learning, as we work to ensure that students graduate from LCA with all of the foundational skills needed for a successful future in Math.  Our 5th and 6th grader students are taught Algebra and Geometry concepts to provide a solid introduction to the higher levels of mathmatic instruction students will encounter in middle school and beyond.

The Open Court reading series continues to build a solid foundation for students as they learn to interact and respond to a variety of texts.    We also integrate the use of challenging novels in 5th and 6th grade that tie into the learning in other content areas.  The use of novels stretches students in their comprehension abilities, as well as develops a strong love for reading a variety of literature.

Textbooks are used to support the learning of Social Studies and Science units studied in 5th and 6th grade; however, hands on projects, research and experiments are also important components utilized in the classroom. Social Studies units include the study of Ancient World Civilizations (Ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt and China) and US history, including the Westward Expansion, the American Revolution, the Civil War, World War I and World War II.   A few examples of Science units studied in 5th and 6th grade are: the study of Cells and Genetics, Forces and Motion, Geology, Ecosystems, Chemistry, and Astronomy.

Throughout all subject areas in 5th and 6th grade, students are stretched and challenged to write, write, write!  Expanding students writing abilities is a major focus during their final two years at LCA.  Students are given many opportunities to publish and share their written works throughout the school year.   Students in 5th and 6th grade complete a major research paper, which they learn to compile, step by step.

In Bible, students complete a survey of the Old Testament as they discover how the Old Testament fits together as one continuing story.  Students also learn how God’s truths can help them gain victory in the “race of life” as they study the lives of various Bible characters and as they are given an overview of the book of Revelation.  What does it really mean to live for Christ?  How does the Bible speak to me in the choices I need to make today?  How can my life reflect the love of Jesus?  These are some of the questions we hope to help our students answer as they seek to know the Lord better.   As each student graduates from LCA, it is our prayer that they would use the foundation they have been given to impact the world for Christ.

God called me to be a teacher in the 1980s and I have been doing His work ever since in many different capacities. I had a classroom of my own for 4 years before taking a break to home-school my three children. Since then I was a substitute in various local schools, including LCA, until I became the Fifth & Sixth Grade teacher three years ago. My husband of 25+ years is a Chaplain in the Delaware National Guard. For the past 9 years we have lead a Christian marriage retreat for Guardsmen. I also love to bake, drink coffee, and spend time with my family.
