3rd & 4th Grade

In our 3rd and 4th Grade classrooms, students are continually challenged to stretch and grow in their reading, writing and math skills.  The focus in 3rd and 4th grade begins to shift from “learning to read” to “reading to learn”.  In addition to reading novels, the Open Court reading series provides students with a variety of texts, fictional and nonfictional, which are tied together by a general theme.  This theme allows students to create connections between different stories and texts as they read.

Through our “Scott Forseman – Addison Wesley” mathematic textbook series, students are continually challenged as mathematic concepts continue to grow in difficulty.   Students are taught a variety of strategies to solve problems, helping students develop a greater understanding of each mathematic concept they are required to master.

In 3rd and 4th grade, Social Studies and Science units take an even greater role in classroom learning as units are integrated with the reading and writing projects that are taking place.  Each year, 3 Science and 3 Social Studies units are completed.  Some examples of units of study in 3rd and 4th grade are Native Americans, PA History, Regions of the United States, the Solar System, Magnetism, Pond Life and the study of Cells.

In Bible, students focus on how to grow lives that reflect the character of God by studying the lives of Abraham, Jacob, Joseph and Daniel.  Students also take an in-depth look at the life of Jesus through the study of the gospels during their time in 3rd and 4th grade.  Our Bible curriculum “Positive Action for Christ” builds students’ knowledge of the Bible, as well as helps students apply Biblical truths to their daily lives.

One of our goals in 3rd and 4th grades is to instill in our students a true love for learning.  As they explore the various units of study, they are able to see how God is at work in the world He created.   When students complete 4th grade, they are well prepared to face the new challenges and demands that await them in 5th and 6th grade.

In 2010 I graduated from Campbell University in North Carolina, where I was born and raised, married my wonderful husband and moved to PA where I began teaching at the Goddard School. This is my 5th year teaching 3rd and 4th Grade at LCA. I have two dogs (a Chihuahua and a Pointer named “Storm”), a beautiful new son, and I love to cook; I make a pretty mean North Carolina cole-slaw! I love to spend time with my nephew, Cody and look for fun ideas on Pinterest.com.
